Space Engine the new frontier is here

SpaceEngine - is a free space simulation software that lets you explore the universe in three dimensions, starting from planet Earth to the most distant galaxies. Areas of the known universe are represented using actual astronomical data, while regions uncharted by human astronomy are generated procedurally. Millions of galaxies, trillions of stars, countless planets!

Capabilities

All types of celestial objects are represented: galaxies, nebulae, stars and star clusters, planets and moons, comets and asteroids.

Known celestial objects are represented using data from the catalogs: galaxies (NGC/IC), stars (HIPPARCOS), star clusters, nebulae, planets (our Solar system data and known extrasolar planets).

Uncharted regions of space feature procedurally generated objects: galaxies, stars, star clusters, nebulae and planetary systems.
The observer is free to move around the universe. Transition between any celestial body and any scale occurs seamlessly.
The observer can move around in space using the WASD keys, like in First Person Shooters. Movement with inertia is made possible in Spacecraft mode or Aircraft mode.

"Select and fly" autopilot: just click on any object with the mouse and hit the 'G' key to automatically go directly to the object.
Automatic binding of the observer to a moving object and automatic selection of optimum flight speed.

Search for celestial objects by name. Search for stars in a radius around you. Scalable map of the Universe and a planetary system browser. Saving locations and autopilot's journal.

Built-in wiki system with descriptions of many known objects and ability to extend by user. Possibility of renaming and describing of any object, including procedural ones.

The orbital motion of planets and stars is calculated in real time, with the ability to accelerate, decelerate, or reverse the flow of time.

Display of orbital paths of celestial objects, their rotation and motion vectors, labels and markers, celestial grid, current selection pointer and user velocity vector.

Volumetric 3D models of galaxies and nebulae with interstellar dust clouds.

3D landscapes of planets and stars: for many solar system bodies actual data from space probes is used; for uncharted and procedural planets the surface is generated procedurally on the GPU.

The exact model of the Earth's atmosphere (code by Eric Bruneton), adapted for the other planets.

Lighting effects: lens flares, solar eclipses, shadows of planetary rings. Celestial objects cast light and shadows onto each other.
Controllable space ships (alpha).

Original background music with context-dependent switching of tracks.

Localization to many languages, with the ability to add new ones.

Ability to import user addons: models, textures, catalogs.

Physicists Find Evidence That The Universe Is A 'Giant Brain'

Here is a story worth sharing. We often speak of the universe being a reflection of ourselves, and point to how the eye, veins, and brain cells mirror visual phenomenon in the universe. As above so below right? Well check this out. How about the idea that the universe is a giant brain? The idea of the universe as a 'giant brain' has been proposed by scientists and science fiction writers for decades, but now physicists say there may be some evidence that it's actually true (in a sense).

According to a study published in Nature's Scientific Reports, the universe may be growing in the same way as a giant brain -- with the electrical firing between brain cells 'mirrored' by the shape of expanding galaxies. The results of a computer simulation suggest that "natural growth dynamics" -- the way that systems evolve -- are the same for different kinds of networks -- whether its the internet, the human brain or the universe as a whole.

When the team compared the universe's history with growth of social networks and brain circuits, they found all the networks expanded in similar ways: They balanced links between similar nodes with ones that already had many connections. For instance, a cat lover surfing the Internet may visit mega-sites such as Google or Yahoo, but will also browse cat fancier websites or YouTube kitten videos. In the same way, neighboring brain cells like to connect, but neurons also link to such "Google brain cells" that are hooked up to loads of other brain cells. "The new study suggests a single fundamental law of nature may govern these networks", said physicist Kevin Bassler of the University of Houston. ""For a physicist it's an immediate signal that there is some missing understanding of how nature works," says Dmitri Krioukov from the University of California San Diego.

So this may seem weird, but let's think about this. We always talk about consciousness being the underlying fabric of the universe from which all things emerge (M-theory, string theory, Unified Field Theory, etc). Consciousness is known to be the ground of being. So not only is the universe conscious like a brain, it is growing like a brain as well. But here's a question...a brain to what? Is it possible we exist as a thought within the mind of some Super Intelligence? Are we just cells in the mind of the Universe? Maybe, maybe not, but it's fascinating to think about.

First View of the Solar System's Tail

It has long been assumed that our solar system, like a comet, has a tail. Just as any object moving through another medium -- for example, a meteor traveling through Earth's atmosphere -- causes the particles to form a stream trailing off behind it. But the tail of our solar bubble, called the heliosphere, has never actually been observed, until now. NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer, or IBEX, recently mapped the boundaries of the solar system's tail, called the heliotail. By combining observations from the first three years of IBEX imagery, scientists have mapped out a tail that shows a combination of fast and slow moving particles. The entire structure twisted, because it experiences the pushing and pulling of magnetic fields outside the solar system.

Cosmic Journeys : Supermassive Black Hole in the Milky Way Galaxy

From a distance, our galaxy would look like a flat spiral, some 100,000 light years across, with pockets of gas, clouds of dust, and about 400 billion stars rotating around the galaxys center. Thick dust and blinding starlight have long obscured our vision into the mysterious inner regions of the galactic center. And yet, the clues have been piling up, that something important, something strange is going on in there. Astronomers tracking stars in the center of the galaxy have found the best proof to date that black holes exist. Now, they are shooting for the first direct image of a black hole.

From a distance, our galaxy would look something like this.

A flat spiral, some 100,000 light years across, with pockets of gas, clouds of dust, and about 400 billion stars rotating around the galaxy's center.

That center -- bulging up and out of the galactic disk -- is tightly packed with stars.

Thick dust and blinding starlight have long obscured our vision into the mysterious inner regions of this so-called "bulge."

And yet, the clues have been piling up, that something important...something strange... is going on in there.

The first to take notice was the physicist Karl Jansky back in the 1930s.

He was asked by his employer, Bell Telephone Labs, to investigate sources of static that might interfere with what it saw as the killer app of its time... radio voice transmissions.

Using this ungainly radio receiver... Jansky methodically scanned the airwaves. He documented thunderstorms, near and far... and another signal he could not explain.

It sounded like steam -- a hiss of radio noise. Jansky narrowed it to a spot in the constellation of Sagittarius, in the direction of the center of the galaxy.

Located within a larger pattern of radio emissions... ... Jansky's sighting would become known as Sagittarius A*.

The word of Jansky's finding got out. He assured the public that it was not aliens seeking contact.

But that's just about all anyone could say... for over three decades.

Then Erik Becklin got on the case.

Becklin is one of those rare researchers whose curiosity and determination push our understanding to a whole new level.

It was the 1960's and astronomy, like society, was in a period of ferment. Startling new observations were being made... and new interpretations were in the air.

Quasars had just been discovered... extremely bright beacons of light from deep space. Were they coming from the centers of distant galaxies? And what powerful objects were generating them?

To study an event at the center of a galaxy, you have locate it. Young Becklin first took aim at our neighboring galaxy, Andromeda.

In ultraviolet light, you can see a dense glow in the middle. Becklin found the point where the light reaches peak intensity... and marked it as the Center.

From our orientation in space, all of the Andromeda galaxy is in full view.

But our galaxy is a different story. We live inside it, of course. Becklin had to find a way to see through all the dust and gas that obscure our line of sight into the center. So he went to a military contractor...

...and obtained a device that reads infrared light... whose wavelengths are similar to the distances between particles in a dust cloud, allowing them to move right through.

Becklin began measuring the brightness of the light as it rose to a peak... marking the location of the galactic center.

Pinpointing this site would now allow astronomers to begin probing for details with a new generation of powerful telescopes... to peer into the bright lights... the forbidden zones... deep in the heart of the Milky Way.

Becklin wasn't the only astronomer interested in the galactic center.

Reinhardt Genzel, and a team based at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Germany, began a similar campaign in 1990... from the New Technology Telescope in the mountains of Chile.

A few years later, in 1993, high atop Hawaii's Mauna Kea volcano...

Eric Becklin and colleagues, including Andrea Ghez, began using the newly christened Keck Telescope. The American and German groups shared the same goal... to pinpoint the precise location of Sagittarius A*, and find out what it is.

Because the object is too small to see... at 26,000 light years away... they would study it by tracking the orbits of stars around it.

Even seeing them would take the sensitivity of Keck's wide aperture; an instrument powerful enough to detect a single candle flame at the distance of the moon...

Meanwhile, using a similar technique, astronomers had focused the new Hubble Space Telescope on a different galaxy... a giant elliptical cloud of nearly a billion stars, lying some 50 million light years away called M87.
